Most of Bangkok’s historic sites such as the Grand Palace and Wat Pho are located along the Chao Phraya River. So traveling on commuter boats to visit these places becomes one of the most popular activities among tourists. However, after a long walking tour, it is hard to find a place where you can sit, relax and sip a cup of coffee while watching the hustle and bustle of the river. Wait no more! You can do all of these things and more at Tha Maharaj Pier.
Located on Maharaj Road, known as a center of amulet trading in Bangkok, Tha Maharaj is not only a boat pier but also the only riverside community mall nearest to the Grand Palace, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, the Temple of Dawns (Wat Arun), the Temple of the Reclining Buddha (Wat Pho) and National Museum. All of them are major tourist attractions in the city. The pier is in old neighborhood surrounded by charming local shops and two old prestigious universities. You can easily spend a few hours in this area, visiting these landmarks, stroling a small street and finishing it off at Tha Maharaj.
Opened in March 2015, Tha Maharaj has cafés, bakeries, Thai sweet shops, restaurants, beauty salons and amulet and antique shops. Itf also has a riverfront deck that overlooks the other side of the river. You can take a ferry across the river to Wang Lang Pier near Siriraj Hospital. The market behind this pier is famous for a myriad of small local retail shops and food stalls. For foodies, this is also an ideal place to sample Thai Food.
The pier is accessible by bus and taxi. Certainly, the most scenic route is to take a boat from Sathon pier.
First, take a BTS sky train and get off at Taksin station, which is connected to Sathon pier. Then, take the Chao Phraya Express Boat (green flag, orange flag, red flag or yellow flag boats) to Prannok/Wang Lang pier (N10). Take a ferry from this pier to Wat Mahathat pier, which is next to Maharaj pier.
Alternatively, take the Chao Phraya Express Boat with green flag or orange flag to Tha Chang pier (N9) and walk to Tha Maharaj.
The most convenient way of all is to take the Chao Praya Tourist Boat (blue f lag boat) to Tha Maharaj pier.
